etnies AM Getting Paid Winnipeg qualifier results

The etnies AM Getting Paid Qualifier was in Winnipeg this past Saturday (June 26th) at the Forks plaza. This is by far the largest skate park in Canada; you got everything you could dream of to skate in one spot. All the local skaters are very diverse in their abilities to skate everything in front of them, which definitely really impressed me. With the jam format this year we get to see a lot of tricks in a very small amount of time. Some of my favorite tricks of the day were; BS 360 down the big 3 by Austin Thomas, Switch Varial heel down the big three by Jamie Mospanchuk and watching Colin Lambert breaking 5 boards!! At the end of the day everybody was ripping but we can only have one winner and that guys name is Jamie Mospanchuck! 1st Place Jamie Mospanchuck, 2nd Place Colin Lambert, 3rd Place Adam Lecker. Man you are sleeping if you don't have the Freshjive (www.freshjive.com) blog book marked. If y'all been down fro the get go, you will have seen these on some collectors cards. Shits too good. Found photos is an ongoing showcase of found photography from the 1960s through the 1980s. These photos were obtained from abandoned storage facilities, after the tenants failed to pay rent and the contents were auctioned off.

Anybody remember this Freshjive ad from way back? One of the hottest ad series that came out. 'I photographed Dominique as the second of our series of adult vixens back in 1997. I payed her nothing, but she insisted that her facial reconstructed make up artist get hired on (he was supposedly both Michael Jackson’s and Elizabeth Taylor’s make up artist as well). I shot it in my apartment, and she showed up cracked out of her mind. The shoot almost didn’t go down because she was tripping so hard from all the cocaine she was on. It got pretty tense. I manage to shoot two rolls of 10 shots before the plastic surgery disaster of a make up artist insisted we photograph no more because we said we were only shooting a “couple” rolls. Nonetheless, though it was tough, I was stoked when we developed the film and managed to get the shot.' Rick Klotz

Everyone likes official statements. Here's the official recap out of Montreal. Also, the official WITS Montreal video is up, so peep that as well.

Montreal was one of the lucky cities to be on the official Wild in the Streets stops. This year’s edition was the 5th one to happen in the province of Quebec and it was the first time the vent was going global in multi locations. Beside Montreal, Tampa, Madrid and London were also under the radar of this amazing skateboard event.

With the support from the Emerica crew and global team riders Heath Kirchart, Brandon Westgate, Justin “Figgy” Figueroa and Canadian riders Mike McKinlay, Dave Nolan, Justin Allain and Brad Sheppard, it was by far the best one ever with double the crowd of the previous years gathering over 600 skateboarders from everywhere in Quebec, some from the Maritimes provinces, Ontario. B.C., and the USA.

Emerica decided to come down in Montreal to support a new cause in the Quebec Skate Plaza Foundation launched by Montreal’s living legend Éric Mercier. The skate parks situation in Quebec is really poor and way behind the other provinces. This is where the foundation wants to act; to bring resources and expertise in the future projects development and assure a healthy scene in the province.

After launching the website earlier this year, it was a first public event for the foundation and what a way to bring awareness toward it and the skateboard scene of Quebec in general. The rain might have scared few skateboarders since it was pouring hard only two hours before the peaceful rolling manifestation. Skaters started to show up right after the rain and within the time to gather everyone in front of the monument at Tam-Tams (the bottom of Mont Royal) the pavement was all dried up and ready to receive thousands of wheels.

Lead by Oliviero Fontana, a well known and respected skateboarder in Quebec, we all went down in front of the meeting point to turn on Mont Royal Street where people were amazed by the sound and camaraderie of all skaters being pictured and filmed by hundreds of mobile devices. People were literally applauding the commotion; even 70 years old ladies and politicians were spotted giving props to the event. When the police saw and heard this rolling crowd, they immediately followed the skaters and escorted the parade to make sure no one was getting injured or in trouble with surrounding cars. We taught they may ask to stop the gathering and make sure we were not going to skate private location, but it was the complete opposite. They asked us where we were going so they can protect all of us by escorting the whole route and even blocking streets where we were skating spots. They were a huge part in the success of the event and we’re proud they were as much cooperative and making sure this day would count no accidents.

We skated the gap to ledge at Lafontaine Park, then destroyed the rail at Camillien-Houde arena to roll after to the Old Montreal cegep near a crazy gap over the fence to downhill, like really downhill. From there we got to our final spot; the Peace Park, a park where a plaza should be instead of drunks and junkies. They get to be there all the time with no problems, but if you’re on your board, you better watch yourself because it’s an automatic ticket. At least this time was a symbolic stop since the cops were there to make sure we can skate it with no hustles. They then modified our course to let us pass in bigger streets blocking the traffic so we can easily make our way at Underworld skate shop downtown Montreal where a BBQ organized by the shop and royal agency was waiting for the crowd.

It was also the first time the event received this amount of coverage, many links have pop up on the Internet, CTV did a special report on the event and already 3500 readers have seen the push.ca article. For sure this day will be reminded and hopefully more skaters will joined this great event in the future.

It was a perfect day, Wild in the Streets has allowed the foundation to raise around 2000$ during the day by the sales of an Emerica limited edition t-shirt, Olymel / Lafleur hot dogs, Red Bull beverages and water from royal agency and Timebomb Trading. But it is not done; t-shirts will still be available to buy in local shops in the Montreal area as well as on the foundation’s blog.

Thank you, to everyone who came out to support the event and the cause and if you still have never experienced the Wild in the Streets event, make yourself a favour and try it next year, or even better, plan yours with your friends and the skateboard community in your region.

Wild in the Streets London Recap

Sunday June 20th was a great day for skateboarding in London. The sun was out, Emerica pros Braydon Szafranski, Aaron Suski and Kevin ‘Spanky’ Long, together with Euro riders Eniz Fazliov & Ante Aiello + UK riders Tom Knox & Chris Ault, were in town and approximately 300 kids were amped to go Wild in the Streets together with them. Emerica would like to thank everyone that was there and helped make this day one to remember.

WITS London’s aim was to raise money and awareness for Southbank.
In 2006 The Side Effects Of Urethane art collective gave the space at London’s legendary Southbank skate spot a new lease of life by installing skateable sculpture blocks. However having been skated heavily over recent years, the blocks are now in desperate need of updating. Toby Shuall, one of TSEOU founders, has been given permission to replace the blocks with updated versions, and is actively raising funds to create brand new and improved skateable sculptures at the Southbank.


It’s an ambitious project which will require significant investment to pull off. During WITS London Emerica collected a few hundred Pound Sterling. More is needed though to get the new block at Southbank. Therefore, for the next week, you can still order your Emerica tee in Green or Black through Slam City to support Southbank.

Bruce Kalberg

Freshjive presented THIS photo exhibit of Bruce Kolberg. From 1979-1984 Bruce Kalberg photographed virtually every band and personality against the backdrop of the first rush of Punk Rock in Los Angeles and Hollywood. As publisher and chief creative force behind NO MAGAZINE (NO MAG) Bruce photographed both the music and art scene nightly in his studio in Echo Park creating a portrait of fashion and underground culture like no one else. This was the real culture made up of outsiders, losers, immigrants, Punk Rockers from generation one (1976-1982) living in Hollywood thirty years ago, more crudely wrought lives outside of the sparkle and spotlights than the Entertainment Industry would have you imagine. The obverse of the coin of the world presented nightly on shows such as Entertainment Tonight, this was the heart of Hollywood.

Broken Social Scene Island Fest Recap

This past weekend Broken Social Scene curated their own summer festival featuring themselves, Pavement, Band of Horses, and Beach House. Completely sold out with 10,000 people the event had a great atmosphere. Instead of having some fast food hot dog or pizza vendors the band picked all their favorite local Toronto eataries/breweries and had them set up booths on the island. Also available at the show were the extremely limited RVCA x BSS vintage dye t-shirt that sold out before the band even got off the stage.

Aside from the usual 12+ piece live Broken Social Scene band they were also joined on stage by friends Feist, Emily and Jimmy from Metric, Sebastien from Death from Above 1979, the guys from Pavement, and John McEntire from Tortoise/Sea & Cake. "Just want to thank you all for helping to make Go Skateboarding Day 2010 a huge success! In Vancouver we had almost 1000 skaters show up and with the weather permitting, we hit the trains to 10 spots around the Greater Vancouver Area with only a few run-ins with police (at every stop), some loud chanting and some amazing (jaw dropping, actually) tricks landed. Also, the traditional barge across the viaduct was not lost at all – I got some great footage of us stopping traffic during rush-hour in one of Van’s main city arteries."

Broken Social Scene on Jimmy Fallon

Last week RVCA friends Broken Social Scene hit Late Night w/ Jimmy Fallon where they played Texico Bitches and closed the show out with 'Meet Me in the Basement' with special guests Fred Willard and Cedric the Entertainer on stage for a little air guitar. Pretty epic!
